Biography: Born in Effingham, Newhampshire on December 17, 1821, Dr. Burbank practiced dentistry in Maine before moving to San Francisco in 1853. Dr. Burbank moved to Los Angeles in 1866 and purchased both Rancho La Providencia (with its inholding of Rancho Cahuenga) from David W. Alexander and Francis Mellus, and Jonathan R. Scott's portion of Rancho San Rafael. Combined Dr. Burbank acquired a little more than 9,200 acres for less than one dollar per acre. He raised wheat and sheep and built a ranch house on what is now the backlot of Warner Bros. studio.

Dr. Burbank sold his land for $250,000 in 1886 to Los Angeles land speculators who formed the "Providencia Land, Water and Development Company". Dr. Burbank served as one of the directors of the new company. On May 1, 1887, the Providencia Land, Water and Development Company named the new town Burbank.
