Reference Services

The Burbank Central Library and two branches, Buena Vista Branch and Northwest Branch, offer an extensive collection of reference print materials, as well as electronic resources, expert research staff, and supportive services. Through participation in cooperative library systems, the Burbank Public Library is also able to furnish access to additional resources.
Reference Desk 
The Reference Desk is staffed by librarians during the hours the library is open. They are there to help locate any book or information you might need. If you are looking for a book, magazine, CD, video, DVD, or just need to know where to start, stop by and ask for assistance.
Reference service is available through several points of access:

Interlibrary Loan
If you need a book, magazine, or newspaper article that is NOT available in our library, you may request the material through interlibrary loan. To place an interlibrary loan request, please come to the Reference Desk at any Burbank library branch. You will need to complete an interlibrary loan request form, and you need to have a Burbank library card. A fee of $3.00 (as of August 1, 2003) will be charged for each title at the time of the request. There is a maximum of 5 requests per person. Additional fees may be levied by the lending library. You will be notified by mail when the item you have requested is available for pickup. It may take up to 4 weeks to locate the item.

Internet workstations are available at all Burbank libraries at no charge. Reservations are for same day use only, must be made in person and are limited to two 55-minute sessions per day. Fifteen minute express terminals are available without limit. Terminals are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Data may be saved to a flash drive or printed at $.10 per page.

Home Borrower's Service
If you can't come to the library, we'll bring the library to you!  We provide library service to Burbank residents who are confined to their homes or are unable to carry library materials due to age, illness, or a temporary or permanent disability. Each homebound person is individually profiled and matched with a volunteer on a one-to-one basis. A volunteer delivers library materials every four weeks on a day and time agreed to by the homebound person.

Braille Institute Talking Book Deposit Collection

Do you know someone who's visually and/or physically impaired?

At the Central Library and Buena Vista Branch Library, we offer a large selection of deposit library audiocassettes (recorded books) for the visually and/or physically impaired. Braille Institute registered patrons may trade in their faulty or broken digital or cassette machine for a new one. Applications are also available at both libraries for eligible patrons to register to become Braille Institute library users.

We order new titles in the Talking Book Collection on a monthly basis. Please notify reference staff when you are checking out or returning the cassettes.

Use the library's online databases to access magazine or newspaper articles, language learning, genealogy research, historical or literary information, and much more.
